I mentioned earlier that I was working on creating a custom t-shirt for the organization Designers Against AIDS. I was working off of the theme of “protect yourself” which is one of the fundamental beliefs of the DAA—that protection and awareness are the best cures for AIDS.
I decided to work with the idea of armor, and transform a t-shirt into battle gear against AIDS. I hand-dyed all of the shirts in different shades of gray and then machine quilted certain pieces of fabric to be used for the armored parts. I designed a custom coat of arms for the DAA with two crossed sewing needles, and I hand-embroidered the entire piece. The “breastplate” is made from clear plastic that is sewn over a series of condoms in a checkerboard pattern.
The end result is perhaps a bit more kitschy than I first intended… but I had fun with it, and sometimes you just need to stop being so serious about design work and just have some fun.
